Why an ELV Maintenance Contract Protects Your Security Investment

Security systems fail silently

A failed lift is obvious within minutes. A failed camera is discovered weeks later, on the day the footage is finally needed — and by then the incident is unrecoverable.

This is the defining characteristic of ELV systems: almost every failure mode is invisible during normal operation. Nobody notices that a camera has drifted out of focus, that a recorder stopped writing one channel, or that a UPS battery has lost its capacity, until the moment the system is asked to do its job.

What actually degrades

Cameras

Dust and humidity accumulate on housings, gradually softening the image. Focus drifts as mountings expand and contract through the summer. Infrared illuminators dim over time, so night footage degrades long before the camera fails.

Recording and storage

Surveillance drives run continuous write cycles and typically show early warning signs of failure long before they stop. In RAID configurations a single failed disk often goes unnoticed — protection is silently gone, and the next failure takes the array with it.

Power backup

UPS and battery capacity falls steadily with heat and cycling. A battery that met its design runtime at handover can deliver much less after years of service, which matters whenever an approved security design requires a defined backup duration.

Access control and barriers

Door contacts drift out of alignment, request-to-exit sensors lose sensitivity, and barrier gearboxes and safety photocells wear with cycle count.

Firmware and software

Unpatched network devices are one of the more common routes onto a building network. Cameras and recorders are network devices and require the same patch discipline as servers.

What a serious AMC includes

Judge a maintenance contract on what is measured and reported, not on how many visits it promises:

  • Scheduled preventive visits — cleaning, focus verification, alignment and functional testing on a defined cycle.
  • Health reporting — a written record per visit stating what was tested, what was found and what was corrected, with photographs where relevant.
  • Storage and retention verification — confirmation that every channel is recording and that the retention period still meets your compliance obligation. This is the check most often skipped.
  • Battery load testing — actual load tests rather than a voltmeter reading, which reveals nothing about capacity under load.
  • Firmware management — reviewed and applied in a controlled window, not left indefinitely.
  • Defined response times — separate targets for critical faults (recording stopped, entrance barrier down) and non-critical ones.
  • Spares provision — clarity on which parts are held and which carry a lead time. In the UAE, an imported controller can mean weeks of exposure.

The visit frequency should follow risk, environment and manufacturer guidance. An exposed camera near a dusty loading yard may need more attention than an indoor office camera. Critical recording, barrier and access-control faults should also be monitored between visits; preventive maintenance is not a substitute for fault alerts.

Preventive versus reactive cost

Reactive maintenance appears cheaper until the first significant failure. The costs that surface are rarely the repair itself:

  • Compliance exposure — missing retention, failed cameras or undocumented corrective work can create inspection and operational risk.
  • Evidence loss — the incident that cannot be reviewed because the channel had not been recording.
  • Emergency premiums — out-of-hours callout and expedited freight on a part that a planned visit would have flagged months earlier.

Questions worth asking a provider

  • Will you certify that every camera is recording and meeting retention, in writing, each visit?
  • Are battery load tests included, or only voltage readings?
  • What is the response time for a stopped recorder, and what does it cost outside business hours?
  • Which spares do you hold locally for my specific equipment?
  • Do I receive an asset register listing every device, its firmware and its warranty status?

Cyber maintenance belongs in the contract

Network-connected cameras, recorders and controllers need named accounts, least-privilege access, configuration backups and a controlled firmware process. The provider should record the existing version, review security advisories, test compatibility before an upgrade and document the result. Remote access must be approved, protected and removable when the support relationship ends.

Conclusion

An AMC is not an insurance policy against faults — it is the mechanism that ensures the system still works on the day it is needed.
