
Card, Biometric or Mobile: Choosing the Right Access Control Credential
The credential decides the system
Controllers, software and locks can usually be changed later. The credential is what your users physically carry and interact with every day, so it drives enrolment effort, replacement cost and — most importantly — how easily your access control can be defeated.
Proximity and smart cards
Where they work
Large populations with routine turnover: staff floors, contractor access, shared offices. Issuing and revoking is quick, and users understand them without training.
The critical distinction
Not all cards are equivalent. Legacy 125 kHz proximity cards transmit a fixed number with no encryption and can be cloned in seconds with equipment sold openly online. If a site is still running 125 kHz on doors that matter, that is a live vulnerability regardless of how modern the software is.
Specify 13.56 MHz smart cards with encrypted mutual authentication (DESFire EV2/EV3 or Seos). The cost difference per card is small; the security difference is total.
The weakness that remains
A card grants access to whoever holds it. Sharing and tailgating are behavioural problems no card can solve.
Biometrics
Fingerprint
Accurate, well understood and inexpensive per door. It struggles with worn fingerprints in trades and industrial environments, and contact readers raise hygiene concerns in healthcare and food handling.
Face recognition
Useful at selected high-throughput or higher-assurance entrances where lighting, camera position, enrolment quality and presentation-attack detection have been validated. Being contactless resolves the hygiene and gloved-hands limitations of fingerprint readers, but performance must be proven with the actual user population and environment.
What biometrics genuinely fix
They bind access to a person rather than an object. A fingerprint cannot be lent to a colleague, which is exactly why biometrics belong on server rooms, pharmacy stores, cash handling areas and site perimeters.
What they oblige you to handle
Under UAE data-protection law, biometric information used for unique identification is sensitive personal data. Before enrolment, document the lawful basis and purpose, minimise what is collected, define retention and deletion, restrict administrator access, protect transfers and explain the process to users. Some systems create mathematical templates from an enrolment image; confirm whether the original image is retained, where every artefact is stored and how deletion propagates to readers, controllers, servers and backups.
Mobile credentials
The phone becomes the credential over Bluetooth or NFC.
- Advantages: nothing to print or post, issue and revoke remotely in seconds, and users rarely forget a phone. Onboarding a new starter takes moments rather than a visit to the security desk.
- Constraints: depends on user devices, battery and a permissions prompt users must accept. Always retain a card or PIN fallback — a flat battery should not strand an employee outside the building.
Mobile credentials also require a lifecycle decision: whether the credential is held in a vendor application or device wallet, whether readers work offline, what happens when a phone is replaced and how quickly a lost device can be revoked.
Choosing in practice
Most well-designed sites are not single-credential. A workable pattern:
- Perimeter and main entrance — smart card or mobile, sized for throughput at shift change.
- Departmental doors — the same credential, with permissions grouped by role rather than by individual door.
- High-value rooms (server, pharmacy, cash, records) — biometric, or card plus PIN where biometric governance is not yet resolved.
- Visitors and contractors — temporary cards with automatic expiry, issued against photo ID at reception.
Two details that decide day-two success
- Group permissions by role, not by door. A new joiner should inherit a role in one action. Sites that assign door by door become unmanageable within a year and quietly drift toward over-permissioning.
- Coordinate with fire and life safety. Door hardware, emergency release and fire-alarm interfaces must follow the approved egress strategy. Test the complete sequence during commissioning rather than assuming every lock uses the same fail mode.
